Purchased for a Purpose

Imagine a king who loved you so much that he would come off his throne.

There once was a man who was a slave to a cruel taskmaster.  Now this slave knew no other way of life.  He was bound, blind to any chance of escape. But there was also a mighty king. This king was filled with love and compassion so much that when he looked at the poor slaves, his heart was broken.  The king longed to see these wretched individuals freed.  But what could he do?  They were bound to the taskmaster; they were not his subjects.

A plan formed in this king’s mind, a way to purchase these miserable creatures away from their fate.  There was only one way. The king must come down. He must descend to the filthy level of the slaves and purchase their freedom. That’s exactly what God did: He came down to our level and through His blood He purchased you and I.  Through the sacrifice of dying on the cross, He purchased our eternal salvation.  It’s just up to us to accept that beautiful gift!

Yet I think there’s a deeper level of God purchasing us or owning us. That level covers our every day activities, living a life that is submitted to God 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  It’s great to act like a Christian on Sunday. It’s great to really get your praise on and “have some church.”  But when the organ tremolo has faded away and the last goose bumps have disappeared from your body, is God still all-powerful? Is He still the redeemer of your soul? Does He still want to affect your life and the people you talk to? Yes! Everywhere we go, God is already there. With every person we talk to, God is there waiting to show his love through our lives, waiting to show His healing power through humble people.

I want to be used of God in every day living. I want to show His love and compassion everywhere I go.  Not from some natural kindness or extra special goodness, but because King Jesus has purchased my life. He owns every day and every hour.

Do you want every hour of your life to count? What does salvation mean to you — and what should it mean? Share your thoughts in the comments.

It is not only the fact that God has purchased our life and saved us, but also that everyday He leads us. He has already seen our situation and has a ready plan for us day by day. The only issue is that we have the choice to either follow what is planned for us through His word or we could do our thing. Salvation is the already planned day by day itinerary set before us by God.

I think people don’t consider often enough (okay, I don’t consider often enough) what it means that we are “bought with a price.” (I Cor 7:23)

With freedom comes responsibility. In fact, freedom is itself a responsibility: the responsibility to act in a way that becomes a free man. Humans are not only spiritually free, but we were freed by an act of God.

The free man has not an obligation, but a reverence and a desire to please the one who made him free. Failing to realize that (or act on it, as Regan mentioned) causes us to act callously or selfishly, which really just harms us. As G. K. Chesterton wrote, “we have all forgotten what we really are.”

(And yes, you’ll be hearing more from me about Chesterton soon. Consider this fair warning. ;) )

Amen! You gave a much better reason to live for God than many of us may have. It seems like some people feel obligated to live for God, or just live for Him because they fear Hell. Its so much more positive and powerful when we respond to his love and commitment to us with love and commitment to Him.

  4. Hey gang! Was reading through your recent blogs and I’m really excited about how well you are all doing this. As I read the comments others have posted about this article, I too, must say that if you are following God for a get out of jail free card(hell) you are living with an inferior mentality of a servant/slave and not a son and heir to the promise of God.

There is a big difference between doing good works to earn favor with God and doing good works(including prayer, fasting, witnessing, etc.) because of the favor you have. I mean He Loves us so much He is DYING to be with us. So He saved us on the cross. Jesus is COOOOOL stuff.

Our freedom was purchased at the cost of His life. His life for ours. When you purchase something you become the owner. Honor God with your body and your spirit which are God’s. To live with this understanding is awesome. We are not our own. He paid the price to adopt us as His children. We now have His protection, provision, inheritance and authority of His name! Now we are the sons of God and it does not yet appear what we shall be! When He returns to redeem His purchased ones, the one’s with His Holy Ghost seal on them we will go to be with Him for eternity.
